Dear friend,

It’s been a while since I’ve genuinely had fun writing a story. But the one that was published on The Pearl last month, I had a blast writing. Originally, I wrote it to submit to a different online magazine called Havok, but they weren’t interested, so I was very glad when I found The Pearl could use the story.

Tooth Thief” came about when I wondered if the tooth fairy ever got desperate for teeth. And then I wondered why she would get desperate for teeth. I mean, what does she do with all those teeth?

And then the story just kinda…happened.

Honestly, you can get a lot of good inspiration when you put classic mythological characters in desperate situations.

Like, what if Santa’s reindeer stopped being able to fly suddenly?

Or what if St. George was best friends with the dragon?

Or, if you’re my friend Lucy, what if the Easter Bunny was antisocial?

So, I’m going to challenge you. Write some flash fiction where a mythological character has a problem, and then let me know how it goes.

I look forward to hearing about it!

Sincerely,

R. J. Catlin

P.S. If you want to know what the tooth fairy does with the teeth, you can read “Tooth Thief” here!
