Dear friend,
I know how hard it can be to focus. I’ve got ADHD so I’m on the leaderboard when it comes to distractability.
On literally anything.
Even things I like.
“That sounds miserable,” you say. Eh, it’s more annoying than anything.
Even if you don’t have ADHD, you struggle to focus sometimes. It’s just the way things are, especially in our busy world. Your phone’s notifications, the traffic outside your window, and other people’s expectations are all highly distracting.
I’ve found some tools that help me focus. They don’t always work (it depends on what’s causing my distractions) so I have to rotate through them. So, if one doesn’t work for you try again a different day.
Turn Off Your Phone
Don’t come after me.
Phones have some amazing uses, but they are one of the most distracting things ever. Turn off your phone (or if you must have it, put it on Do Not Disturb. Sleep the social media and messaging apps) Take a break from it while you focus on something else.
Take a break
Sometimes all it takes is fifteen minutes of walking around, stretching, or reading to reset your brain.
Speaking of which, I’m gonna go run downstairs a sec. Here’s some elevator music…
[elevator music]
Okay, I’m back! Thanks for waiting. Moving along…
Give your Brain Something to Do
Sometimes listening to instrumental music or sticking a piece of gum in your mouth is just enough to occupy the subconscious part of your brain that wants to do something else. I prefer listening to piano music or movie soundtracks. My friend sucks on starburst candies.
Occupy the part of your brain that is bored and looking for something to do, and BAM you’ve just eliminated a bunch of distractions.
One Last Tip
Actually, I’ve got five more tips! If nothing I’ve suggested thus far has worked, or you had so much success that you want more, enter your email in the form below, and I’ll send you five more tips to kick distraction in the teeth!
Sincerely,
R. J. Catlin
