Dear friend,

I have a friend named Lillian. (There’s a picture of her in this article I wrote a few months ago.) Lillain and I love to talk about the books we’ve been reading whenever we hang out.

As it so happens, Lillian is also the name of the main character of Copper Lies, the book that Alli Prince just released. It is a steampunk novella for young teen girls. And. It. Has. A DRAGON.

Pretty cool, huh?

The other cool thing about the book? I got to read it before it released.

I know. You’re jealous, aren’t you?

Well here are some more things that are cool about Copper Lies.

Copper Lies

If you make something, and then that something accidentally comes alive and destroys your entire town…would it be fair to say that you destroyed the town, or can we just blame it on the thing?

Lillian Booker is dying to experiment on the strange glowing rocks hidden inside her adoptive father’s workshop—but the professor forbid it before he left on his journey. As Lillian learns all she can about the stones without breaking the professor’s rule, she finds herself stuck between two worlds.

Will she live the life of a brilliant inventor or give up on her dreams and become a respectable lady instead? What will make her happy? Most importantly, which will prove to the professor that he didn’t make a mistake when he chose her?

When Lillian secretly builds a mechanical dragon, one mistake leads to another—the strange glowing stones collide with her creation and the dragon roars to life. Lillian must make a choice…lie and keep her dragon a secret or finally face the truth?

Will any of it matter anyway if the town’s already been destroyed?

Don’t let the fun adventure and peril of the story fool you. The themes in this book hit home for me, and I have word that it wasn’t just me. Early readers have been posting quotes throughout this past week on Instagram. Some of the lines in the book are sarcastic and witty, others are deep and and profound.

I loved Lillian’s spunk, the sidekick’s loyalty, and the villain’s hateablility. The Lillian had a great character arc, the setting was steampunky (light on the steam and emphasis on the punk, as in, Lillian is a bit of a punk), and the pacing was spot on.

Oh, and did I mention? There’s a dragon!

Have I convinced you yet?

Go get the book from Amazon here!

If you’re not convinced yet, go meet Alli on her website. She writes weekly about defeating your inner critic over at her website. You can get to know her better there!

Sincerely,

R.J. Catlin
